First of all, if you do not like reading erotica, then you should probably pass on these stories. And for those who critique negatively with this author for writing an erotic Highland story, you really should've read the disclaimer(s) before purchasing. Please don't blame the author for your failure to read the disclaimer that these books contain explicit sexual scenes. I was in the mood for a gooooooood historical erotic romance and normally, Ms. Knight delivers....but not this time :(Her only friends are woodland creatures as she lives alone in an isolated cottage in the woods. Shona is a healer with many secrets...she's a beautiful, red/auburn haired peaceful and kind woman with soft pale brown eyes. She's lived alone for so long that she's become lonely for companionship.
Ewan Grant is a huge warrior with blond hair and bronzed skin. He's a gorgeous golden god with icy-blue eyes that sparkle like a summer sky... sensual lips and a roguish grin that draws the women to him. And he loves his women... giving them immeasurable pleasure. He's a reknowned warrior and captain of Castle Gealachs' army...one who fights with graceful finesse.
I don't mind erotic romances...in fact I enjoy them if there's a story with it. This story is more of a convenient excuse to write about erotic love-play wrapped around a feeble plot of a wounded warrior being found by a healer. It's so fast paced making the characters woefully underdeveloped. This story is a far, far cry from Ms. Knights previous outstanding and brilliantly told trilogy leading up to this story.... The Highland Bound Trilogy Boxed Set (Behind the Plaid, Bared to the Laird, Dark Side of the Laird). I adore Ms. Knight and her works...but this one was a miss for me.

I didn't read the previous books in this series, but thought this book was fine as a standalone. I found this novel entertaining and well written but I did have some issues with it. First off, I didn't like that in the beginning of the story the hero, Ewan, is found in bed with four whores. It made me think less of him and bothered me throughout the rest of the story. I have read many historical novels in which the hero will seek out whores before they meet their heroine, but it hasn't bothered me like this one. He just enjoyed it too much and didn't have any remorse, emptiness or negative feelings about it. Then when he meets Shona and they engage in sexual acts, it's hard to see the difference between her and the whores he was with previously. There is not enough development of their relationship and their connection. The sex scenes are hot and steamy but they seem the result of Ewan being a man-whore and not that of a man who has developed strong feelings for another. There definitely should have been more relationship development between Ewan and Shona for us to feel the difference.
Other than that, I liked how well described the characters and the action was. The plot held my interest all the way through.It is clear that there will be more to this story in the next book of the series.
This is a book that in the beginning I was sure would be a low rating but as the story went on I did feel better. I still can not overlook the problems I had but I also can not just write it off as a bad read. The h is Shona and she is known as the, "Witch of the wood." She is a healer and has no memory prior to the last five years. She was found dirty and starving by Rory MacLeod. He took her in and taught her things to help her survive. It has been two years and she is alone in her cottage after his disappearance. She is lonely and so desperately wants a love of her own. That is when she sees the H, Ewan Fraser. He is in the middle of a fight with the MacDonald Clan and is almost killed.
Sir Ewan Fraser is second-in-command to the Laird Logan Grant and for the first half of the book I thought he was a pig and hated him for our h. As captain of the guard he opens up in the book with four whores. Well in this book you are there in the room during and can I just say I do not find it sexy, in fact, for me it is hard to like the H afterwards. It is interrupted right on the cusp of completion and more than I want to see in my H behavior. I wanted to shout, "Didn't your mother tell you to watch where you put your mouth?" They are whores you don't know where that's been! Well you do and that's even worse.
What about the h was different or special to make her stand out? What is shared is his open appreciation of her breasts and the rest of her body. The author needs to strengthen that moment you feel when you know the couple have connected. I really think that is key to a romance and to clarify sex and a love connection are not the same. A longer period of time to show the H/h learning about one another's personality, something other than just red hair and the outer shell would have helped.
The second half became easier for me and the author does a fantastic job with her action. I really enjoyed the villain in her story. He is known as the Butcher. Cool name right? Yea he is as violent as his name implies. I have read no more in the series but was able to follow this book with no trouble. The time travel was not in your face, in fact, it was barely referred to. I hope the author continues to write and will work on her craft. Enjoy!!
